Project Overview

Surge Fitness Lifestyle approached our team to design a mobile application that would help their members track fitness routines, monitor progress, and stay motivated in their fitness journey. With a growing membership base, the gym identified a key challenge: many users were struggling to maintain consistency and lacked a simple way to measure their progress.

The goal was to create a user-friendly mobile experience that empowers members to manage workouts, set goals, and stay engaged — all from their smartphones.

Problem Statement

Many gym members struggled to maintain consistency in their fitness journeys due to the lack of a convenient and accessible workout tracking solution. Most users relied on memory, notes, or manual methods to record workouts, resulting in inaccurate progress tracking, reduced accountability, and declining motivation over time.

As a result, users found it difficult to monitor performance, identify improvements, and stay engaged with their fitness goals. The objective was to design a mobile-first fitness application that simplified workout tracking, improved progress visibility, and encouraged long-term user engagement through an intuitive and motivating user experience.

User Interviews
Participant 1

How do you currently track your fitness progress, and what challenges do you face in staying motivated and consistent?

This participant currently uses a mix of a physical journal and mental tracking to monitor workouts and goals, but finds it difficult to stay consistent and motivated. They often forget details due to relying on memory and struggle with measuring progress in a meaningful way.

Key Insights:

  • Needs visual progress tracking (e.g., charts or graphs) to stay motivated

  • Struggles with accountability and consistency in routines

  • Desires reminders or notifications for accountability

  • Would benefit from an exercise library for guidance and variety

Participant 2

What features would help you stay motivated and track your fitness progress more effectively?

This participant is highly goal-driven and would benefit from features that provide structure, feedback, and personalization. They emphasized the importance of clear visual data, motivational elements, and app flexibility to match personal routines.

Key Insights:

  • Wants daily challenges and goal-setting tools for engagement

  • Needs visual stats to track performance over time

  • Expects personalized workout plans based on fitness level and goals

  • Prefers custom reminders and motivational push notifications to stay consistent

Key Learnings

Simplicity Drives Adoption
Mobile users expect fast and intuitive interactions with minimal effort.

Prioritization Is Essential
Every screen element must justify its presence due to limited screen space.

Consistency Improves Usability
Reusable interaction patterns help users learn the product faster.

User Flows Matter More Than Screens
Optimizing journeys often creates more impact than visual changes alone.
