Surge Mobile Application

Project Overview

Surge Fitness Lifestyle approached our team to design a mobile application that would help their members track fitness routines, monitor progress, and stay motivated in their fitness journey. With a growing membership base, the gym identified a key challenge: many users were struggling to maintain consistency and lacked a simple way to measure their progress.

The goal was to create a user-friendly mobile experience that empowers members to manage workouts, set goals, and stay engaged — all from their smartphones.

User Interviews
Participant 1

How do you currently track your fitness progress, and what challenges do you face in staying motivated and consistent?

This participant currently uses a mix of a physical journal and mental tracking to monitor workouts and goals, but finds it difficult to stay consistent and motivated. They often forget details due to relying on memory and struggle with measuring progress in a meaningful way.

Key Insights:

  • Needs visual progress tracking (e.g., charts or graphs) to stay motivated

  • Struggles with accountability and consistency in routines

  • Desires reminders or notifications for accountability

  • Would benefit from an exercise library for guidance and variety

Participant 2

What features would help you stay motivated and track your fitness progress more effectively?

This participant is highly goal-driven and would benefit from features that provide structure, feedback, and personalization. They emphasized the importance of clear visual data, motivational elements, and app flexibility to match personal routines.

Key Insights:

  • Wants daily challenges and goal-setting tools for engagement

  • Needs visual stats to track performance over time

  • Expects personalized workout plans based on fitness level and goals

  • Prefers custom reminders and motivational push notifications to stay consistent

Persona

Name: Eric

Location: Makati, Philippines

Occupation: IT Professional

Age: 34

“I want to stay motivated and see visible progress in my fitness journey.”

Goals

  • Stay consistent and motivated in his fitness routine

  • Track workouts and measure progress with clear, visual data

  • Reach specific fitness milestones like weight loss and improved stamina

Pain Points

  • Finds it hard to stay accountable without visible progress

  • Manual tracking methods are tedious and often neglected

  • Lacks tools that accurately reflect his workout performance and guide adjustments

Device Usage

  • Smartphone: Primary device for all fitness-related activity; prefers mobile apps for convenience and portability

  • Desktop Computer: Used mostly for work; not preferred for fitness tracking

Problem Statement

Many gym members were struggling to stay motivated and consistent in their fitness routines due to the absence of a convenient and accessible tracking tool. Without a reliable system in place, users often relied on memory or manual methods like pen and paper to log their workouts — leading to inaccurate tracking, lack of accountability, and reduced motivation.

This made it difficult for members to measure progress, make informed adjustments, or stay engaged with their goals over time.

Project Outcomes

The Surge mobile app MVP provided gym members with a streamlined, accessible way to start tracking their fitness progress and building healthier habits through clear, goal-driven design.

User Impact
  • Users could log workouts by type, duration, and intensity — allowing them to track personal progress over time

  • The app supported setting fitness goals such as workout frequency, strength milestones, or weight targets

  • Visual dashboards (charts and summaries) made it easier for users to stay motivated by seeing their improvements

  • Personalized workout plan modules were introduced based on fitness levels and goals to keep users engaged

MVP Scope

The MVP focused on core features that addressed the most critical user needs, such as progress tracking, goal setting, and workout guidance — laying the foundation for future enhancements based on real user feedback and testing.
